From bustling big cities like Berlin and Hamburg, and the historic sites of Nuremberg and Lübeck to the stunning scenery of Heidelberg and Freiburg – Germany has an endless number of iconic places to photograph. Brimming with gothic churches, charming old-world streets and romantic castles, there’s a photo opportunity around every corner. Here’s our pick of the five most photogenic places in Germany.

Spanning the Rhine River, Cologne is Germany’s fourth-largest metropolis. Best known for its Roman origins, the city is bursting with photo opportunities. Though perhaps the most picturesque of them all is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the 13th century Cologne Cathedral. Dominating the skyline, the 640-year-old building is the second-highest in the city and boasts one of the largest functioning bells in the world. This impressive piece of gothic architecture was completed in 1880 and is the most photographed building in Cologne.

Olympus Photography Tip: Using a wide-angle Olympus lens will help you capture the beauty of the entire building.

The northern gateway to the beauty of the Rhine Gorge, Koblenz sits waterfront as one of Germany’s most picturesque cities. From vine-clad hills and romantic ruin castles, this city that was founded as a Roman settlement over 2,000 years ago is sure to add some beauty to your photo album. The Electoral Palace showcases majestic 18th-century architecture at its best. Perched atop a hill, this neoclassical building is framed by lavish, landscaped gardens and is picturesque from every angle.

Olympus Photography Tip: Take a snap from the bottom of the hill to capture the grandeur of the palace in its entirety.

Mainz Christmas Markets

If you really want to get some pictures of German culture at its finest, look no further than Mainzer Weihnachtsmarkt – also know as Mainz Christmas Markets. Set against a backdrop of the over thousand-year-old Cathedral of St. Martin, Mainz Christmas Market offers stand after stand of Christmas specialties including homemade garlands, straw stars, tree decorations, wooden toys, ceramics and more. Well lit with an over-abundance of Christmas lights, you’ll be able to capture a fusion of history, culture and gastronomy in one place.

Olympus Photography Tip: Increase your aperture and set your shutter speed to the lowest setting in order to capture the full Christmas market ambience.

Rhine Gorge

Spanning 65 kilometres, the spectacular Rhine Gorge is the most scenic section of the Rhine Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rhine Gorge is rich in unique flora and fauna and is one of the most-visited sections of the Rhine Valley. Filled with charming small towns—including Boppard, Lahnstein, Braubach, and Bacharach, to name but a few—the photo opportunities of the German countryside are in Rhine Gorge.

Olympus Photography Tip: If you’re choosing to drive along the river, set your camera to video setting and capture the ambience of the riverside stretch of beauty.

Architectural wonders are plentiful in the city of Munich. Take shots of the resplendent Baroque-style Nymphenburg Palace, the Olympic Stadium and the city’s picturesque squares, including the historic Marienplatz – the city’s main square since the 12th century which is home to the magical Glockenspiel clock with its mechanical moving figures. The highlight of your photography in Munich will no doubt be your visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, built by the reclusive Bavarian King Ludwig II in the 19th century. A perfect example of castle romanticism architecture, its grand turrets could be straight out of a fairytale.

Olympus Photography Tip: Use a zoom lens to capture the intricate detailing of these spectacular pieces of architectural artwork.
