Unawatuna is the quite possibly the chillest little place in Southern Sri Lanka. It’s tiny but one of the most beautiful beaches in Galle, plus it is just a train ride away from so many cool places. This little coastal town is a “don’t miss” in Sri Lanka, especially if you are travelling with your significant other.

Here’s a few things couples should know to plan their trip to Unawatuna.
A short hour’s drive will take you to Bentota, home to idyllic palm beaches and luxury resorts such as Centara Ceysands. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Bentota River, this beachfront paradise is absolutely to die for. While you’ll of course be out exploring and having fun at the beach, where you stay does matter when you are on a couple’s trip, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a nicer place to watch the sunset on the beach with your special someone.
You must eat the local food. Couples who try new food together, stay together! Well, not a real saying but it should be because experiencing new things in the form of a new flavor is a great activity to share with your significant other. Most curries here are coconut based and have a little kick to them. Try Black & White restaurant on Unawatuna Beach and Koko’s Beach Bar and Grill.
You can’t miss just two things here which are the Japanese Pagoda and Jungle Beach. Unawatuna is the place to just chill and be in love, but you can do these in the same day as a local boat will take you past the pagoda on the way to the secret beach.
You can also do dolphin and whale tours.
Why not do something totally different? You can try going fishing with locals using just a string and bait- no fishing poles here! Even if you’re not great, it’ll give you a laugh and if you are successful you can cook it on the beach – an experience you will never forget.
Try SUP yoga together (you’ll see sea turtles), do pilates, try cooking classes, Ayurveda spa days (Sanctuary spa is fantastic), or go surfing at the many beaches that have decent waves.
There’s a lot to do here, but with these being some of the brightest most beautiful sunsets in the world, it’s hard to leave the bar with a great drink which is okay, too!
