Coral Coast Charm: Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

The breathtaking Coral Coast is one of the world’s must-see tropical wonders. Serving as Fiji’s tourism hub and home to a number of world-class beachfront resorts, the south-western coastline of Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu truly brings the glossy pages of travel magazines to life with a brilliant blend of oceanfront splendour and South Pacific adventure.

Our Travel Team relishes any opportunity to travel to this beautiful part of the planet, and on our most recent journey, we visited one of Fiji’s most iconic and best-loved resorts – Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort.

Outrigger

This famous accommodation establishment was in fact Fiji’s first five-star resort and still serves as a local benchmark after more than a dozen years of operation. With authentic village-style hospitality and a prime beachfront location set just a few sandy steps away from the iridescent waters of the South Pacific Ocean; it’s easy to see why so many travellers make this charming resort their annual holiday destination of choice.

The Resort

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort comprises 40 acres of pure beachside bliss with a private sandy shorefront and a gorgeous turquoise lagoon. The resort reflects a meeting of true Fijian architecture and modern convenience, with a number of traditional bures (thatched-roof bungalows) and contemporary hotel-style rooms with plush amenities.

Outrigger

We couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in all aspects of this incredible resort, so we made a beeline for the lobby and checked-in lickety-split!

Outrigger

We were made to feel utterly welcomed and even a little celebrity-like after being introduced to our very own VIP Talai Butler – think of Batman’s Alfred Pennyworth but with an irresistible South Pacific twist! We were told that our butler would be on-hand to satisfy any request; from making dinner reservations, to delivering a delectable daily serving of champagne and canapés to our room each afternoon.

The Room

Speaking of rooms, our Deluxe Ocean View Room provided sweet refuge from the scintillating Fijian sun and was appropriately equipped with all the expected mod-cons. The room was generously spacious (47sqm in total) and featured everything we could possibly need – from cable TV, to air-con and even fluffy bathrobes with matching slippers to boot! Our room also featured a private balcony – the ideal spot to soak in stunning views of the South Pacific Ocean.

Outrigger

There was to be no unpacking though, as the chore was kindly taken care of thanks to our Talai Butler who also pressed a few of our more wrinkled holiday clothes while we indulged in a cool drink – what a legend!

Dining

There’s a saying that mandates, “variety is the spice of life” and guests are presented with plenty of variety when it comes to in-house dining options here at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, with six restaurants and five bars to choose from.

Outrigger

Our mornings usually started off at Vale Ni Kana – a huge bure that dishes up delicious buffet-style breakfasts, café-inspired lunches and decadent themed buffet dinners with nightly live cultural entertainment. Dinner themes range from Italian favourites to authentic Fijian feasts and embody must-try dining experiences.

Outrigger

Serving as Outrigger’s signature in-house eatery, the Ivi Restaurant (named after a towering 100 year-old ivi tree) is the place to go for sumptuous Pacific Continental cuisine.

Outrigger

Looking to unwind with a few drinks? Sundowners Bar & Grill is sure to hit the spot – this inviting beachfront bar is hugely popular for its chargrilled steaks, fresh seafood, wood-fired gourmet pizzas, and of course, those fruity cocktails.

Kids’ Club Program

While we didn’t travel with any kids, there’s no doubt that guests with little ones will love Outrigger’s on-site kids club programs – known as Little Riggers (for children aged 3-7 years) and Beach Riggers (for children aged 8-12 years). From water-polo tournaments and local nature tours, to traditional Fijian games – it’s non-stop fun for kids big and small!

Outrigger

Adults looking for some time-out from the kiddos can leave children aged between 6-months and 12 years in the capable and caring hands of the resort’s Meimei Nannies. Kids will enjoy fun-filled days of activities and educational programs that are tailored to their likes, interests and needs, while mum and dad enjoy some uncompromised relaxation.

Facilities & Activities

There’s also an endless array of on-site activities you keep you happily occupied while holidaying at Outrigger.

Outrigger

Feel free to spend a lazy day by the central swimming pool (one of the biggest in Fiji), take in a nightly cultural show, or hit the beach for some fun under the sun.

Outrigger

Beachfront activities include snorkelling, paddle-boarding, volleyball and kayaking just to name a few.

Outrigger

In the local dialect, the term “vahavu” means “to relax”, and that’s exactly what awaits you at the Vahavu Bistro and Pool. This strictly adults-only area is a great place to unwind with a few cocktails and tasty tapas by day or night.

Outrigger

Hidden among lush tropical gardens, Vahavu features a 20-metre lap pool, 35-metre lagoon pool, expansive sundeck, and swim-up bar.

Outrigger

Fitness fanatics are guaranteed to make use of the resort’s 24-hour gym, while keen tennis players are sure to love the fully-lit courts.

Outrigger

For something a little more slow-paced, why not treat yourself at Outrigger’s award-winning on-site Bebe Spa?

Outrigger

Set high on an elevated ridge known as, “Heavenly Hill”, Bebe offers luxurious treatments while granting majestic views across the ocean. The impressive spa complex played a starring part in ensuring Outrigger was named the “Best Destination Spa Resort” at the Australasian Spa Association Awards in 2013.

Outrigger

A few members of our travelling troupe indulged in more than one soothing 60-minute massage and even enjoyed a youth-restoring organic treatment administered with the finest Pevonia Botanica products – one of Europe’s leading skincare brands.

Outrigger

After visiting Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, you’ll leave feeling completely relaxed, refreshed and re-energised … and perhaps even a little regretful that your time in paradise has come to an end. But don’t despair fellow travellers, just start planning a return trip like we are – see you there!

TripAdvisor Reviews:

Bula! Fantastic!

Five out of five stars

“Having travelled in the UK, Europe and parts of Asia we found this to be the friendliest and most pleasant resort/hotel that we have stayed in.

We stayed in April with our family in the Ocean View rooms. They were comfortable, have great views and are well serviced. The complimentary wine/beer and canapes at 5 o’clock are a nice touch.

Our family enjoyed the activities provided, mostly around the main pool, but also the reef and spa. Although we were in a time when the resort was almost full it did not seem crowded. Adults who want time away from the children have an Adults Only pool, a great Nanny service and a Kids Club.”

“Wow wow wow. What an amazing place”

“This is our 5th trip back to Fiji and our first with our two kids (3 and 1.5yrs old). We like to think of ourselves as that traveller who is anti resort and likes a thatched hut but realise with two small kids for a relaxing holiday that could be very hit and miss. So we settled for the other extreme; a resort where we didn’t have to leave for the 7 nights we were there….and we didn’t leave!

From the welcome at reception, to the friendly hello from every single member of staff to each staff member getting down to the kids height, speaking with them and asking them how they were, I cannot fault the resort. ”

“Return trip, amazing again.”

Five out of five stars

“My wife and 2 children (4 and nearly 2 year old) returned to the Outrigger for 5 nights after having our wedding there last November.

It is the same awesome place we remember, great facilities, relaxing, beautiful location and surroundings. Once again the staff were amazing, they make this resort!!

One thing we did on this trip that we didn’t last time was experience the Ivi restaurant. We are not fine dine sort of people, but my wife and I decided to give it a go, we loved this experience and the food was top notch. I am so glad we decided to dine at the Ivi this time. I would say to all couples you need to experience it.

We were so sad to leave as we were last time.”
