Ireland & Scotland

Fans were delighted by the long awaited-reunions, awkward introductions and icy encounters that took place in House Stark’s ancestral home of Winterfell during the sentimental first episode of season eight last week. Predominantly filmed in Ireland and Scotland, their highlands are rich with natural and wild geography, ideal for filming the striking, green countryside that Winterfell resides in.

If you would like to experience Winterfell in person, visit the sandstone rubble towers of Duone Castle, Scotland – a medieval stronghold on the fringe of the Scottish Highlands. Castle Ward in Northern Ireland is also a primary set location for Winterfell. Its green countryside and natural beauty boasting a classic Emerald Isle landscape.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Oh! You can smell the shit from five miles away.” – Olenna Tyrell as she nears King’s Landing

Discover the charming old city of Dubrovnik, known affectionately to GOT fans as King’s Landing; capital of the seven kingdoms and home of the Iron Throne. Famous for its marvellous medieval walls surrounding the world heritage-listed city in Croatia, this destination is a must-see for all Throne enthusiasts.

With striking Gothic and Renaissance architecture backdropped by the Adriatic Sea, the beautiful churches, monasteries and fountains of Dubrovnik are fit for a king… or queen, which is probably why they chose to shoot here.

Visit this seaside castle-city and experience the magic that is Dubrovnik, seen best from its highest point, the Minceta Tower. Explore the well-trodden cobblestoned St Dominic Street, its narrow streets forming the slum district of Flea Bottom. The wooden drawbridge at Pile Gate serves as the main entrance to the old city and connects to West harbour and Fort Lovrijenac, all familiar corners of Kings Landing. From there, climb the centuries old steps of Gradac Park for excellent views of the city and ocean, where the Purple Wedding feast was filmed and Joffrey met his grisly death.

A worthwhile, quick trip from Dubrovnik is Lokrum Island, where you will discover the trading city of Qarth, “The Greatest City that Ever Was or Will Be”.

Spain & Morocco

The impressive San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spain lies the breathtaking Dragonstone, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. With many historic medieval Islamic palaces and natural beauty, Spain is also home to Highgarden (Castillo de Almodóvar del), Meereen (Castellón) and the Dothraki Sea (Tabernas Desert).

A stones-throw away from Spain lies Morocco, its towering walls and intricate designs forming Slaver’s Bay, where Daenerys ends slavery, freeing the Unsullied warrior-eunuchs and expanding her rule. Morocco’s rich colours and stunningly tiled homes make for a picturesque destination, perfect for a Game of Thrones inspired getaway.

Experience Morocco for yourself on a 10-day tour, including return international flights from Australia!

Iceland

Moving North now, beyond the wall and into wilding territory, Iceland sets a wintery scene, with snow capped mountains and stunning glacier views. Grjotagja Cave, also known as Ygritte & Jon’s Love Cave is located near Myvatn in North Iceland. The Geothermal hot spring is a popular tourist destination, so please enjoy the natural waters with your clothes on.

Glorious glaciers and dramatic gorges can be found at Thingvellir National Park, the frozen lava field of Mycatn Lake and various other set locations boasting large ice caps and breathtaking scenery. Stakkholtsgja Gully is where Jon and his party catch a white walker to take back to King’s Landing.

Explore Iceland on a five-day Northern Lights Tour.

The premiere of season eight was viewed 17.4 million times, making HBO’s largest streaming night ever. The cinematic series is utterly mesmerising, with these amazing locations forming complex worlds appealing to huge audiences around the world. Experience the magic for yourself and go visit one or all of them!
