All too often, travellers are blinded to Bali’s true hidden charms by the bright lights of Seminyak and beaches of Kuta but the ultimate relaxation lies at the heart of this island paradise – amid the verdant forests and rambling rice paddy plantations of idyllic Ubud.
More than ready for a break from Bali’s usual tourist trappings, our crew set off for Furama Villas & Spa in Ubud and found an inviting haven where luxury, indulgence and flawless service are commonplace.
An enchanting rural oasis where time seems to meander at a slower and more relaxed pace; Bali’s spiritual, cultural and artisanal centre of Ubud is the perfect place to unwind when visiting the Island of The Gods.
Spectacular scenery characterised by lush tropical forests, tranquil waterfalls and sweeping rice terraces dotted with local farmers tending to their crops is what awaits you during your leisurely drive from Denpasar International Airport (located about 60-minutes away).
Seclusion, peace and privacy are all on the agenda in mystical Ubud … but not at the expense of luxury, which is exactly what you’ll find at Furama Villas & Spa Ubud.
Serving as a Balinese institution for over a decade and one of Ubud’s premier accommodation providers, Furama Villas & Spa Ubud is a multi award-winning gem.
The intimate resort’s fleet of friendly and outgoing staff pride themselves on offering standard-setting service – so it should come as no surprise that the resort boasts a plethora of industry awards including a #1 TripAdvisor Ranking, five consecutive TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence from 2011-2015, a 2015 Conde Nast Johansens Award, a 2015 World Luxury Hotel Award and many more.
Located just 20-minutes from the heart of Ubud, the resort entails a series of plush private pool villas and lagoon access suites scattered amongst rice paddy plantations and swaying coconut palms – a picture perfect retreat for couples seeking romance and relaxation in central Bali.
The property plays host to not just one but two boutique properties – Furama Villas & Spa, as well as FuramaXclusive Villas & Spa. These sister resorts share all on-site facilities but each offers unique accommodation, with traditional Balinese meeting chic modern designs.
The Deluxe Pool Villas feature authentic Balinese décor across a breezy 260sqm floorplan that includes a beautiful private garden with massage gazebo and plunge pool.
Inside you’ll find a comfy four-poster king bed with romantic canopy netting, a flat-screen TV, ensuite bathroom with deep-soak stone bath and al fresco shower, plus more.
Guests can also choose to stay in a Lagoon Pool Villa at Furama Xclusive which represents a more modern interior design scheme.
Featuring 165sqm of space, each villa includes a canopy bed, a private bathroom with romantic rain-shower, plus a gated wading pool that offers direct access to the impressive lagoon-style swimming pool.
As with the accommodation and sterling service, the in-house cuisine at Furama is satisfying in every way.
Guests can wake up to a delicious buffet breakfast each and every day of your stay. Start your mornings off at the PADI Restaurant and choose from an appetising array of Western and Asian delicacies including freshly-baked artisan breads, fluffy pancakes, muffins, pastries, noodles, sushi, bacon and eggs cooked just the way you like, plus so much more.
The hits keep coming with the eatery’s lunch time menu which features options like crispy vegetarian spring rolls with peanut dipping sauce, grilled teriyaki fish, and homemade apple pie with vanilla ice-cream.
PADI also serves up a satiating afternoon tea featuring a section of sweet and savoury treats – a must-try experience!
And when the sun sinks below the horizon, PADI dishes up delectable three-course dinners – choose from traditional Balinese meals like coconut and pumpkin soup, authentic Indonesian chicken curry (known locally as Kare Ayam) with steamed rice and sautéed vegetables, and irresistible chocolate mousse for dessert.
Indulgence of a different kind also awaits at the on-site Spa Furama – a haven for the mind, body and spirit where skilled technicians will leave you feeling utterly pampered with an extensive range of health and wellbeing treatments. The Spa is also perched atop an elevated ridge, granting breathtaking views across the resort down below.
There are also two unique swimming pools to enjoy at your leisure – a traditional resort pool and a modern lagoon-style pool, both featuring swim-up bars.
In addition to the PADI Restaurant, the Suling Bar & Bistro is a great spot to drop in for an afternoon snack and some light refreshments to combat the tropical heat.
The resort even has its very own rice paddy plantation!
Feel free to ask the friendly resort staff for a guided cycling tour of a nearby farming village, or embark on your own walking trek.
Furama also offers a handy daily shuttle service to the centre of Ubud where you’ll find its thriving main street – home to a charming assortment of cosy cafés, bubbly bars, fine dining restaurants and designer shopping boutiques.
Ubud’s famous Art Markets are also nearby, the ideal place to pick up a souvenir or two.
Other iconic tourist spots include the hugely popular Monkey Forest (don’t go in with any loose articles – those furry little critters WILL stake their claim). During our visit, we were unfortunate witnesses to an incident of monkey theft – a small Korean woman had to walk home with one shoe as the other was carried off high into the trees by a particularly cheeky primate.
The historic Ubud Palace is another must-see destination, and be sure to take in a showing of the time-honoured Barong Dance at Batubulan Village.
There’s so much more to Bali than just the tried and true tourist hotbeds of Seminyak and Kuta – embark upon a journey on the road less travelled and experience Ubud – home to the undeniable essence of Bali and Furama Villas & Spa.

“We had an amazing stay at Furama Villas in February 2016. My partner and I stayed in a deluxe pool villa for 3 nights. Accommodation was fantastic, just like the pictures! The staff were so accommodating, Oka took us for a 2 hour bike ride through the rice fields and local village. I would highly recommend staying here 🙂 ”

“Fabulous – the only hotel I have been too that is better looking in real life than the photo’s – gorgeous. It was lovely, welcoming & the pool was brilliant – so was the outdoor shower for that matter. We’ve just returned & it is steamy but the water facilities are fantastic in this weather. Very quiet at this time of year which was fantastic as we wanted peace & a rest. Staff are lovely & always ready to help & go above & beyond. Bed was heavenly too – just loved it all. Perfect place to have a great brekky, lounge around all day & then head into Ubud for dinner – fabulous. Would highly recommend this hotel & we will certainly return.”

“It was a great 4 days and 3 nights experience staying in FuramaXclusive Seminyak and Ubud. We really had enjoyed two things that people look for in Bali, ocean in Seminyak and forest in Ubud. Good place for honeymooners.”
