Get lost in the natural beauty of Milford Sound with a 11km return walk alongside the Arthur River and Lake Ada. Hike to the impressive Giant Gate, where you’ll see the gushing waterfall from the large swing bridge. After your guided walk, set sail to see Milford Sound’s stunning scenery on a comfortable small-boat cruise. Marvel at the mighty Mitre Peak, massive waterfalls and glaciers, and look out for seals and dolphins playing in the waters!

  • 1pm: Water taxi departs Sandfly Point
  • 1.15 pm: Return to Milford Sound

  • Please note: jeans and streetwear are not suitable clothing; please ensure you wear suitable outdoor, active wear for the walks
  • Waterproof jacket, warm hat and gloves
  • Insect repellent, snack food and camera
  • Filled, reusable bottle of water for the hike
  • A change of clothes and dry shoes in case it is a wet day (these do not need to be carried on the walk and will be left at Milford Sound for after the walk)

Availability:

  • Available every day from November to April: Departs 8.30am from Milford Sound
  • Bookings valid to 30 September 2026
  • Departure Point: Meet your guide at the Mitre Peak Cruise counter in the Main Visitors Terminal located at Freshwater Basin (and the end of the road)
  • Parking: Milford Sound is a recommended two-hour drive from Te Anau plus you need to allow time to park, so a 6am departure from Te Anau is recommended. Milford Sound Tourism has implemented paid parking in the main Milford carparks. The cost is set at NZD$10 per hour. This fee is payable by credit card only. On Deepwater Basin Road there is free parking on a gravel carpark. It is recommended to be Milford parked up by 8am if you wish to have free parking in this carpark. From here, it is a 20-minute walk to the main terminal meeting point
  • Parking rates are subject to change and may differ from prices listed above

  • By participating in this activity, guests understand there are risks and hazards associated with participating in Trips & Tramps tours as outlined. You accept that you have been advised to obtain adequate travel insurance for all persons named on the booking. In participating in the activity, the guest confirms:
    • They are physically fit to participate and have disclosed any relevant medical information

  • The Milford Road is steep, windy and narrow in places – less confident drivers should consider taking a transport option. There is no mobile phone coverage after Te Anau Downs, including at Milford Sound

  • Maximum group size for this guided walk experience is 12 people
