Five Day Kakadu & Litchfield Walking Tour
Walking: 3km (easy) – approx. 2 hours
Meals: lunch and dinner
We pick up in Central Darwin at 8.45am and aim to depart at 9am.
Our first stop is at Fogg Dam where we stop for a view of the wetlands. Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve is one of several parks in the lower Adelaide River catchment that provides a haven for wildlife.
We’ll then head off and stop at Windows on the Wetlands Visitor Centre which is perched on Beatrice Hill, one of the highest points on the Adelaide River floodplain.
We head onwards to the Bark Hutt refreshment stop, where we’ll have lunch. After lunch we enter World heritage-listed Kakadu National Park and stop off at beautiful Mamukala Wetlands where we embark on an easy three-kilometre walk.
By late afternoon we will arrive into Jabiru and our accommodation at Anbinik Kakadu Resort where we unload and check into our accommodation. Guides will prepare pre-dinner nibbles and then put together a lovely two-course dinner to end the day.
Walking: 5 km (easy) – approx. 1 ½ hours for Ubirr walk (1km), approx. 1 ½ hours for the Bardedjilidji walk (2.5km), approx 1 ½ hours for the Mangarre Rainforest Walk (1.5km)
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
We depart for the day after breakfast and making lunches. Today we visit Bowali Visitor Centre, the spectacular Ubirr rock art gallery, Cahills Crossing (the entry into Arnhem Land) and we embark on the Bardedjilidji walk and the Mangarre rainforest walk.
Ubirr is one of Kakadu National Park’s most famous Aboriginal rock art galleries. Climb the moderately steep 250 metre track to a rocky outlook with views across the floodplains.
The Bardedjilidji art walk is a 2.5km loop that provides a close up look at the habitats in the East Alligator area as it meanders amongst sandstone outliers, through small pockets of monsoon vine forest and paperbark woodland and past wetland areas.
The Mangarre rainforest walk meanders through the monsoon rainforest of the East Alligator River and features a viewing platform of the river (no swimming).
There is also the option of doing a 5pm flight over the Kakadu Escarpment today.
Two course-dinner prepared by your guides
Walking: up to 16 km (moderate to difficult) – approx. 2 hours for Nourlangie walk (1.5km), approx. 1 hour for the Anbangbang Billabong Walk (2.5km), approx 6 hours for the Barrk Sandstone Walk (12km)
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
We depart for the day after breakfast and making lunches. Today we visit the amazing Nourlangie Rock Art site, Anbangbang Billabong and embark on the 12km Barrk Sandstone Walk.
The Barrk Sandstone Walk takes you from Anbangbang Gallery to the top of Burrunggui (Nourlangie), across the top then down a gully to the woodland at the base. There is an option to do a smaller section of this walk if you are not up to walking the entire 12km loop.
At Nourlangie you can see how local Aboriginal people lived in this area through changing times. The rock art here is simply astounding and you will see the world-famous Namarrgon, lightning man, (among many others) at Anbangbang gallery.
The beautiful walk around Anbangbang Billabong is not to be missed and you get a spectacular view of Nourlangie from this trail. A myriad of birdlife can also be spotted here from Jabiru to Brolga, magpie geese to spoonbills. (Of course no swimming).
After spending the day around Nourlangie we head back to our accommodation for pre dinner nibbles followed by a two course-dinner prepared by your guides
Walking: 2 km (easy) – approx. 1 hour walking (swim at the end)
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Today we have a slightly earlier start, make our lunches and then head off for a morning jam-packed with Top-End wildlife on board the Yellow Water Cruise. On board you will see giant crocodiles, a vast range of resident birdlife including jacana, egrets, jabiru, sea eagles, magpie geese and many other native species. Float through Paperbark forests and see pandanus and fresh water mangroves that line the shore.
After this amazing and memorable cruise, we head about an hour south down the Kakadu Hwy and into Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) for a walk and swim. This short 2km return walk takes you up to the lovely plunge pools and waterfalls of Maguk. The walk meanders by the Barramundi Creek through monsoon forest before leading you to the pristine waters of the plunge pools.
After a glorious and relaxing swim we board the vehicles and head further south to Litchfield where we check into our accommodation at The Batchelor Resort
Walking: 5 km (easy)
Meals: breakfast, lunch
Our last day on tour today. After breakfast and lunch making we pack up the trailer and visit Tolmer Falls, Florence Falls, Buley Rockholes and the magnetic termite mounds.
We walk to the lookout at Tolmer Falls where we stand on the viewing platform to see the water cascading over escarpments into a deep plunge pool, and continue walking to rock pools above the falls.
The Florence Creek Walk links Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole (both offering beautiful swimming opportunities). As you walk, look out for birdlife, including kingfishers, honey-eaters, fairy-wrens and pigeons. Other wildlife to spot includes brown bandicoots and northern quolls. Or you might be lucky enough to see black flying foxes (bats) roosting in the trees.
One of Litchfield National Park’s most impressive sights is the hundreds of termite mounds standing up to two metres high in a wide swathe of empty ground. Up to 100 years old, these structures are unique to northern Australia. Stroll through the area and marvel at what are enormous magnetic compasses, with their thin edges pointing north-south and broad backs east-west.
We’ll then head off and return to Darwin about 5pm
Anbinik Lakeview Resort
Our first three nights will be spent in the Anbinik Lakeview Resort in Jabiru. Here we stay in two bedroom cabins which has shared bathroom facilities for the two rooms in each cabin. Rooms are twin share/double (unless a single room has been requested at the time of booking).
Rooms are cleaned each day as are all of the facilities. Towels and soap are provided and each room has air-conditioning, a fridge, TV and tea/coffee making facilities. We cater for each of the three night’s dinners here. Continental breakfast and lunch making spread is set out each day so everyone can make their lunch (using plastic container and cooler bag provided) prior to the day’s activities.
There is a guest pool at Anbinik which is open from 7am to 10pm and laundry facilities (open 24 hours).
The Batchelor Resort
Our final night is spent at The Batchelor Resort. Here we are accommodated in motel-style rooms, each has its own ensuite and television. We cater for both night’s dinners plus breakfasts.
