After breakfast, prepare lunch and head out on your second walk. It’s all bushland and coastal scrub along the trail today as you make your way to the dramatic landscapes of Cape Raoul, home to some of the tallest sea cliffs in Australia. You can expect strong winds and stunning vistas of the pillared cliffs of Tasman National Park, including the 300-metre-high cliffs of Cape Pillar.
The first breathtaking vista comes after a steady ascent: the bush falls away to reveal the cliffs and Cape Raoul stretching out into the ocean. Enjoy views down to Shipstern Bluff and beyond to Bruny Island and Tasmania’s southern coast. From these lookouts, you’ll enjoy your first encounter with the intense winds the Capes are famous for — some of the strongest in Australia have been recorded here.
A plateau marks a natural pause in the landscape, signalling that you’re about to be treated to views over Mount Brown, Arthurs Peak and Mount Fortescue. A little further east, you’ll spy Cape Pillar, the highest vertical cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere. Today’s walk takes approximately six hours and is classified as moderate.
Your final walking day is the most challenging – and the most rewarding. Take extra care as you set off on the steep, winding trail through rocky scrub and dry forest, where arresting coastal scenes greet you at every turn. Pause to admire panoramas of the coast and Maria Island before arriving at the breathtaking Candlestick and Totem Pole rock formations.
Today’s walk will take approximately five hours and is classified as moderate to hard.
This afternoon, you might like to join an optional excursion (surcharges apply) to the Port Arthur Historic Site. Learn about the UNESCO-listed former convict settlement before wandering through the immaculate gardens.
After breakfast, embark on an exciting three-hour wilderness cruise. See the jagged rock formations up close as your boat expertly navigates the rugged coastline, pausing frequently for wildlife viewing and photo opportunities. Look out for seals, albatross, white-bellied sea eagles and more.
Back on dry land, enjoy one last lunch at the lodge before it’s time to head back to Hobart. The tour ends today, and you’ll be dropped off at Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart between 4.30pm and 5pm.
Note: Please ensure you have dressed appropriately for the cruise – warm jackets, scarves, beanies and gloves are recommended.
