After a delicious breakfast, travel about 90 minutes northwest by private vehicle to the historic Cu Chi Tunnels. Learn firsthand how the Viet Cong extraordinarily survived underground during the Vietnam War, experiencing the life of local soldiers during the conflict as you explore tight passageways and underground caverns. It’s a stunning glimpse into a devastating conflict that is guaranteed to stay with you for years to come.
Return to Ho Chi Minh for lunch in a local restaurant before experiencing a historic tour of Old Saigon.
Our first stop is the palm tree-lined Reunification Palace, where the handover of power took place during 1975’s Fall of Saigon, before heading to either the War Remnants Museum or History Museum for an afternoon spent exploring the nation’s vibrant heritage. Head to the colourful Cao Dai temple for an insight into Vietnam’s spiritual side and discover how the region’s melting pot of Buddhist, Confucian, Taoist, Hindu and folk traditions of the past has informed today’s religious practice.
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the My Tho dock and the award-winning luxury cruise ship Aqua Mekong for a cultural odyssey through the Mekong Delta unlike any other. With only 20 spacious, air-conditioned cabins, this opulent floating boutique retreat offers endlessly captivating panoramas from its floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
This evening, enjoy your first taste of Aqua Mekong’s world-class Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine, developed by renowned Australian chef David Thompson.
Begin the day with an excursion to the picturesque Binh Thanh mat-weaving village or opt to visit vibrant Sa Dec, where you’ll have the chance to explore the village’s unforgettable markets and historic curiosities.
Continue onward to My An Hung and walk through the village’s lush plantations. Taste local produce and listen to traditional folk songs performed by local villagers followed by a unique unicorn dance, or opt to embark on a 17-kilometre bike ride through the Delta’s stunning scenery.
Travel by skiff through the languid Bassac Canal to the extraordinary Chau Doc Floating Market. Dozens of boats sell everything from Vietnamese iced coffee (a must-try) to local produce and sizzling delicacies. After a morning filled with river bartering, continue to the great Buddha of Long Son Pagoda, where you’ll have a chance to speak to local monks about their traditions and practices.
In the afternoon, take an optional bike ride through picturesque Long Khanh Island or enjoy a rickshaw ride to bustling Tan Chau Market with Aqua Mekong’s resident chef. After lunch, relax by the ship’s two-level pool, enjoy a traditional Khmer massage, learn how to cook Mekong-inspired dishes with a cooking class or simply laze on deck and watch the magnificent landscape drift by as you cross the border between Cambodia and Vietnam.
After breakfast, explore the Cambodian side of the Mekong Delta, and see local artisans expertly dyeing and weaving krama – a type of scarf or bandana central to life on the riverside, used for centuries in a tremendous range of uses, including as a hammock for small children and as a ceremonial weapon.
If you’ve been dreaming of hurtling through the scenery on two wheels, now’s your chance – tour past Buddhist temples, thatched stilt houses above the water and oxen as you explore the countryside. After lunch, board aluminium skiffs towards the gently swaying tamarind trees of Preah Prosop, a tiny riverside village untouched for centuries.
Experience Cambodia’s capital in style by hopping on a motorised tuk-tuk. Admire the golden-roofed Royal Palace, the tall white columns of the Silver Pagoda and the traditional architecture of the National Museum of Cambodia, home to the world’s largest collection of Khmer art. For guests who wish to gain a deeper insight into Cambodia’s tragic history, visit the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide or, alternatively, browse the wares at the bustling Russian Market.
In the afternoon, transfer to Phnom Penh International Airport for your flight home.
