The Experiences – From the beauty of the Alhambra to Morocco’s finest sights

One of Spain’s most incredible jewels, the 13th-century Alhambra Palace in Granada is set to take your breath away. This hilltop fortress – which takes its name from the Arabic word for ‘Red Castle’ – is a UNESCO World Heritage site set against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Experience a day to remember as you wander through the soothing pathways and witness the stunning fountains, impeccably-maintained hedges, pools and centuries-old defensive walls that make this site so famous.

See some of Morocco’s most famous attractions including the magnificent Hassan II Mosque partially suspended over the ocean, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Roman ruins of Volubilis and indulge in traditional Moroccan food in Fez, with a unique dinner hosted by a local family.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Lisbon

Welcome to captivating Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in Europe with its Moorish and Roman ruins. Make your way to the hotel and get some rest before tonight’s orientation meeting at approximately 7 pm with your Tour Manager and fellow travellers, followed by a delectable welcome dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Lisbon City Tour

Today will begin with a stop at the top of Edward VII’s Park to enjoy the magnificent view over the hills of Lisbon and the River Tagus. Next, view the treasured 16th century Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards, visit the Cathedral of Lisbon and enjoy the elegant Liberdade Avenue.

This afternoon is at your leisure where you can choose to join the optional tour to quaint Sintra, the ‘Glorious Eden’ of Lord Byron, and ancient summer retreat of the royal court, highlighted by lavish romantic castles and stunning monuments. Visit the Sintra National Palace, a 15th-century royal residence, containing one of the largest tile collections in Portugal.

Enjoy some free time in the Village Historical Centre before returning to Lisbon.

Day 3: Travel to Seville

Depart Lisbon this morning heading South. Cross the region of Alentejo, with its rolling hills, vineyards and cork oak trees. Reach the Spanish border and enter the region of Andalucia. Continue your drive through picturesque Andalucia to Seville.

After dinner, you’ll have the opportunity to attend an optional Flamenco Show in Seville, known as the birthplace of Flamenco.

Day 4: Seville City Tour

Begin the day at the beautiful Plaza de España and the fragrant gardens of María Luisa Park before enjoying a walking tour in the quaint Barrio Santa Cruz, the former Jewish Quarter of the city with its winding cobblestone streets. Continue with a visit to the Royal Alcázar of Seville and marvel at the many examples of Mudejar architecture in this beautiful palace, built for the Christian king Peter of Castile. The rest of the day is at leisure or, join the fascinating optional tour to Córdoba, founded by the Romans. Visit the astonishing Mezquita de Córdoba, one of the largest mosques in the world, transformed into a soaring cathedral in the 16th century. A walking tour of the city reveals the ancient Jewish Quarter with its labyrinth of winding narrow streets, shady flower-filled courtyards, picturesque squares, and view of the 14th-century Synagogue on Calle de los Judios.

Day 5: Ronda Sightseeing En Route to Costa del Sol

Your travels take you to the dramatic cliffside city of Ronda, which overlooks the El Tajo gorge, home to the Plaza de Toros, the oldest bullring in the country. Ronda, considered the birthplace of modern bullfighting in the 18th century, was once a horsemanship training facility. View the historic stables and its interesting museum with exhibits of some of Spain’s most famous Matadors. Later, enjoy a scenic drive to the lovely resort area of the Costa del Sol. Dinner with your fellow travellers this evening, along with displays of famous Matadors before proceeding to the Costa del Sol.

Day 6: Malaga City Tour

Enjoy a full day at leisure in the Costa del Sol, known for its hundreds of gorgeous beaches, quiet hidden coves and glamorous clubs, restaurants, and cafes. Or, join the optional morning tour to Malaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. Visit the Picasso Museum with over 285 works donated by members of Picasso’s family. View the Paseo de la Alameda, fragrant Paseo del Parque and the Barrio de la Malagueta. A walking tour through this historical town is accented by views of the Málaga Cathedral, the second-highest in southern Spain. After a stop at Cathedral Square, return to the Costa del Sol for time on your own. The nightlife of the bustling Costa del Sol is waiting for you tonight.

Day 7: Moorish Influenced Alhambra

Depart the southern coast and journey to Moorish Granada. Your visit is highlighted by a tour of the 13th century Alhambra,* one of Spain’s most celebrated monuments, dramatically perched atop Assabica Hill overlooking the entire city. This imposing hilltop fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the world’s finest examples of Moorish art and architecture. During the reign of the Moors, the Alhambra served as the residence of the royal family. Walk along the lanes of the serene Generalife Gardens with its beautifully designed courtyards, waterfalls and ponds and views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Tonight, dinner is together at a local restaurant

Day 8: Toledo Sightseeing en route to Madrid

Travel via the region of La Mancha, legendary home of Don Quixote, featuring panoramic views of its famous windmills. Continue to Toledo, the former capital city of Spain that still retains its medieval atmosphere and charm. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, Toledo is known for its extensive monumental heritage and historical coexistence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures. A walking tour will include a visit to the Church of Santo Tomé with its masterpiece painting by El Greco and the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the oldest synagogue in Europe still standing. Continue to Madrid and spend the evening at leisure.

Day 9: Madrid City Tour

This morning, take a sightseeing tour of Madrid. Drive along the Gran Via through the Opera District, Plaza de Colón and view the Royal Palace. Pass by the elegant Plaza de Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá Gate. The tour will end at the world-renowned Prado Museum, where you will be able to view works of art by famous artists such as El Greco, Velázquez, and Ribera among others. The afternoon is at leisure or, join the optional tour to Escorial. Visit what has often been described as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. El Escorial is, perhaps, Philip II´s most enduring legacy to Spain. This combination monastery-palace-mausoleum is situated approximately one hour outside of Madrid in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. Return to Madrid in time for a ‘Farewell to Spain’ dinner with your group.

Day 10: Flight to Casablanca, Travel to Rabat

Bid farewell to your Tour Manager and transfer to Madrid’s airport for your flight to Morocco. Arrive in Casablanca and transfer to your hotel in Rabat where you have the rest of the day at leisure to explore the capital city of Morocco or relax in your hotel for your upcoming adventure. This evening, attend an orientation meeting and enjoy dinner in Rabat.

Day 11: Rabat Sightseeing then Travel to Fez

This morning, take a city tour of Rabat. View the Royal Palace and the ancient ruins of Chellah, the Oudaya Kasbah, and the Hassan Tower. En route to Fez, stop and visit the ancient ruins of the Roman city of Volubilis where you will get a chance to see the wonderfully preserved original mosaics, Roman Road, and city layout. As you travel through the Moroccan countryside, pass by the Holy City of Moulay Idriss for a photo opportunity. This evening, upon arrival in Fez, take a short bus tour of the imperial city conducted by your Tour Manager on the way to the hotel.

Day 12: Fez City Tour

Embark on a city tour of Fez. Visit the many hidden treasures of the medina that only a Moroccan guide will know. Fez served as the capital of Morocco for more than 400 years and is home to the University of Al Karaouine, the oldest operating university in the world. It is particularly famous for its tanneries and the Fes el Bali Medina. A short visit to the surrounding leather shops gives you the best view of the tanneries. View the Attarine Madrasa, Moulay Idriss mausoleum, and visit the Nejjarine Fountains and Museum. Opportunities for shopping for authentic Moroccan carpets. Finally, view the exterior of the Royal Palace and walk through the famed Jewish quarter of the medina where you will get a chance to walk through one of the few remaining Jewish cemeteries in Morocco. Though the city has endured periods of hardship, it has emerged more vibrant than ever, boasting its own distinctive culture, art, and even cuisine. This evening, enjoy a special dinner* hosted by a local family and learn about Moroccan culture and traditions.

*Home hosted dinner in Fez may be moved to another day, according to your host’s availability.

Day 13: Travel to Marrakesh

Depart the hotel early morning and drive to Marrakesh via highway. This will be the longest coach ride of your tour. Included will be sufficient rest stops for your comfort and a break for lunch. You will depart Fez in the early morning and arrive in Marrakesh in the late afternoon. Tonight, dinner is at your hotel.

Day 14: Morning Tour of Marrakesh

The morning tour of this fabulous city begins at the 16th century Saadian Tombs, the opulent final resting place of the Saadian royalty. Continue to the Koutoubia Minaret and the beautiful Bahia Palace. You will also have the opportunity to shop for authentic Moroccan argan oil before strolling through the bustling Medina to Djemaa el Fna Square, the lively centre of the city. In the afternoon, perhaps join the optional Camel Ride. Experience the tranquillity of the Palmeraie, a palm oasis outside of Marrakesh, as you ride in Berber style through the valley of lush palm groves on a dromedary, a member of the camel family. The rest of the day is yours for independent discoveries. Tonight, an optional horse-drawn carriage ride takes you through the illuminated streets of Marrakesh ending at a popular restaurant. A typical Moroccan dinner is served while you listen to live music and watch an elegant belly dancing performance that caps off the night.

Day 15: Travel to Casablanca & City Tour

After breakfast, travel to Casablanca and check into your hotel. Later this afternoon, embark on a tour of Casablanca. Your half-day sightseeing tour includes the exterior of the Hassan II Mosque, the largest Mosque in Morocco and the beautiful Corniche seaside. Take a moment to catch your breath at the end of your Moroccan adventure to admire the serenity of the Atlantic Ocean. Continue on a short drive through the residential areas of Casablanca to the city centre to visit the Mohammed V Square, the Habous quarter and the Notre Dame de Lourdes Cathedral. Tonight, say goodbye to your fellow travellers and enjoy a farewell dinner* at a local restaurant on the Corniche.

*The farewell dinner ends around 10:30 PM. Departure flights scheduled shortly after midnight may mean missing part of the dinner.

Booking Conditions: The tour operator will be in touch within 72 hours of purchasing the package. The booking forms must be returned to the tour operator within 7 days of purchasing the package. Reservations cannot be made until the booking form is returned to the tour operator.

Please note: Packages are not transferrable to any other person. The tour order, itinerary, departure dates and airlines cannot be changed after the tour has been confirmed in writing. Any changes to confirmed reservations will incur a A$150 change fee per person.

The package is valid for ONE PERSON (based on twin share). If you are travelling with another person you must purchase TWO PACKAGES, otherwise please purchase the SOLO TRAVELLER package. Solo travellers will get their own room throughout the tour.

Travel insurance is highly recommended.

A visa may be required. It is the traveller’s responsibility to ensure they’re holding a current visa for the countries they’re visiting. Also, if the traveller is on a non-Australian passport, a valid re-entry visa may be required.

Important: Please start arranging your visa at least 6-8 weeks prior to departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours and processing time.

A valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months beyond your return travel date is required for all passengers.

Travellers should have a good level of physical fitness and mobility and must be able to negotiate uneven surfaces and climb stairs.

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is fast, as it includes visits to numerous sites. You will encounter some uneven surfaces, cobblestone streets, stairs, steps and significant slopes. This tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. The longest day spent on the bus is between Fez and Marrakesh, approximately six hours. The earliest wake-up call is 6 am. The full-day Fez optional tour is approximately six hours. Please keep in mind that you will be travelling from European countries to Morocco, with very different styles of government and living, reflected in hotels, guides, tour managers and people you will encounter on the streets. Because of local laws, it is necessary to change buses and tour managers when leaving/entering different countries.
