Taking a day trip from Fes, visit the ancient ruins of the Roman city of Volubilis where you will get the chance to see the wonderfully preserved original mosaics and Roman roads before heading for a Roman-style picnic lunch featuring traditional recipes at a nearby farm.

Journey on to the small village of Merzouga and en route stop at the Berber town of Azrou and the nearby Cèdre Gouraud Forest, a woodland area of cedar trees in the Middle Atlas Mountains inhabited by groups of wild Barbary Macaques. After lunch in Midelt, a commercial centre famous for its production of apples, continue over the mountains via the Tizi-n-Talremt pass and onward through the palm-tree-speckled Ziz Valley and oasis town of Erfoud, known as the ‘Gate of the Sahara Desert’.
