Today, explore one of Madagascar’s pristine national parks. Established in 1962, Isalo National Park encompasses 815 square kilometres of sandstone mountains eroded by wind and rain into ridges (known as ‘runiformes’) featuring wild formations, impressive gorges and canyons, and tiny stalagmite pinnacles. The rugged landscape that rises up from the flat grassy plain attracts hikers from all over the world. Keep an eye out for ring-tailed lemurs, brown lemurs, sifakas and nocturnal lemurs. The park is also home to approximately 80 species of bird (including the rare Benson’s rock-thrush, the knob-billed duck and crested ibis), 35 kinds of reptiles and several endemic frogs.

Here, the flora is just as interesting than the fauna. There are several local endemic plants among the 500 species found within Isalo, including elephant´s foot, rare palms and aloe species. As you traverse this mystical terrain, watch for tombs nestled within the rocks, serving as resting places for the Bara people.

The day culminates with a truly memorable spectacle. Witness the setting sun casting a vibrant palette of deep purples, fiery oranges, and vibrant reds upon the canvas of the sky, framed by the iconic rock formation known as ‘La Fenêtre de l’Isalo’ (Window of Isalo).

Continuing along the sandy coastal road, flanked by mangroves and dunes and punctuated by fishing villages. In this coastal region, men venture out twice a day in their traditional dugout canoes, known as pirogues, while women and children collect the day’s catch and transport it to Tulear.
