It’s time to get out there for a day of adventure. Enjoy a 1.5-hour drive to the harbourside town of Akaroa, stopping along the way to take photos of the South Island’s breathtaking landscapes. A luxury vessel awaits to take you across the bay in search of the world’s smallest and rarest dolphin species, Hector’s dolphin. Cruise across the bay’s shimmering surface, eyes trained for the sweeping arch of a dolphin leaping, all the while soaking up the rugged cliff faces and coastal panoramas of the bay. Enjoy lunch at an award-winning waterfront restaurant and, time permitting, explore this charming seaside town – you might like to visit an art gallery, the local cheese factory, or the Settlers Museum. Return to Christchurch, where you can enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure before enjoying a delicious three-course Spanish welcome dinner with drink at the Curators House restaurant, overlooking the city’s Botanic Gardens.
Rise early for breakfast before your transfer to the train station to board your train for a scenic journey to Kaikoura. Here you’ll find a picturesque peninsula town cradled by the Pacific Ocean and the Kaikoura Ranges. On arrival, you’ll head straight to your catamaran for an exciting whale-watching cruise. Keep watch for giant sperm whales, humpbacks and orcas, as well as bottlenose dolphins, leopard seals and countless species of sea birds.
Back on dry land, you’ll be transferred to the White Morph Hotel where you can settle in before an afternoon at leisure. Be sure to save your appetite for tonight: a two-course seafood dinner awaits at The Pier Hotel, a character-filled waterside pub serving up Kaikoura’s freshest crayfish.
Board your train early this morning for a scenic journey to Picton where you’ll disembark and board the Interislander Ferry to Wellington. Enjoy access to the Interislander VIP ferry lounge as you drink in the beauty of Marlborough Sounds and the dramatic Cook Strait between the South and North Islands. A hot buffet lunch, snacks and complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are included in your voyage.
Once you arrive in Wellington, you’ll be whisked to QT Wellington, where you’ll spend the rest of the evening at leisure. You might like to explore Wellington at your own pace, or simply unwind at your hotel.
If the South Island is all about breathtaking nature and wildlife, the North Island is hands down New Zealand’s cultural hub. Start the day with a fascinating behind-the-scenes Te Papa museum tour. This 90-minute private tour led by a Maori guide offers an insightful look into the history and culture of the te iwi taketake (first peoples of the land).
Movie buffs will delight in the afternoon’s activity: a visit to the WETA Workshop to learn about the props, costumes and creatures created for blockbuster films like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and District 9. Enjoy time to wander through the miniature worlds, creative departments and mini-museum.
Your final night of the tour calls for a celebration. Meet at your hotel’s Hippopotamus Restaurant for a memorable three-course farewell dinner. Swap your travel stories over prawn shumai dumplings, yellowfin tuna sashimi, bibimbap and more.
After your final breakfast, check out of your hotel and head out for one last memorable experience. Soar over Wellington’s crescent harbour, CBD and surrounding mountain range on a scenic helicopter flight. Enjoy an aerial view of some of the city’s famous buildings like Te Papa, the Beehive and the Cake Tin. Afterwards, you’ll be transferred to Wellington International Airport (WLG) for your departing flight.
