What you'll see

Arrive at Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport (UIO), Quito, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, before meeting your tour leader and fellow group members for a welcome dinner.

Depending on your arrival time, you might like to spend some time exploring this fascinating city. From the Middle of the World City monument to the imposing Basilica del Voto Nacional and Church of the Society of Jesus, there is so much amazing architecture to see.

Then, meet your guide and fellow travellers in the hotel lobby at 7.30pm for a sumptuous welcome dinner.

Arrival & Transfers:

Please book your flights to arrive at Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport (UIO) by 3pm. Airport transfers are included on the first day of your tour. Your transfer will meet you on arrival and take you to your hotel. Check-in on Day 1 is at 3pm.

Inclusions
Illa Experience Hotel (Luxury Room) or similar
Dinner

After breakfast, you will join your local guide and explore the centre of downtown Quito, or Centro Historico, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978. Your tour begins with a visit to Main Square, before making your way through the colonial churches to El Panecillo hill, offering breathtaking views of the city surrounded by the rolling Andes Mountains.

Then, travel to the Equatorial Line complex, located at 0º 0´0”. Enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to straddle both hemispheres or joyfully hop between the two in the blink of an eye, before heading back to your hotel for the evening.

Inclusions
Illa Experience Hotel (Luxury Room) or similar
Breakfast

This morning, you will head to the Andean city of Otavalo, home of the fascinating and beautiful Otavalo Market – South America’s largest and most famous market. En route, stop at Guayllabamba, where you can sample the local chirimoya fruit. Make additional stops along the way to admire the beautiful landscape and snow-capped mountains in the area.

Make a short stop at San Pablo Lake before arriving in Otavalo. Visit the textile market at the Plaza of Ponchos, one of the most famous markets in South America, where you will find all kinds of handicrafts including tapestries made on the Spanish weaving loom, as well as the Indigenous backstrap loom.

Afterwards, enjoy some free time for bargaining with the friendly Otavalenos, but don’t restrict yourself to Poncho Plaza – you will most likely get better deals away from the main square, and the goods on display diversify as the market weaves its way through the side streets.

You’ll also visit Hacienda Pinsaqui, famous for its political history, before enjoying lunch at a local hacienda – returning to Quito in the late afternoon for an evening at leisure.

Travel time: Driving – approx. three hours

Inclusions
Illa Experience Hotel (Luxury Room) or similar
Breakfast and Lunch

After breakfast, you will be met by your guide and transferred to the airport for your short flight to the Galapagos Islands. Upon arrival at Baltra’s Seymour Galapagos Ecological Airport (GPS), you’ll undergo a quick agricultural screening process to ensure the safety of these protected islands. Afterwards, a local representative of the M/C Galapagos Seaman Journey will meet you outside to collect your luggage and transfer you to the vessel, your home for the next four nights.

Lunch is served once you are onboard. In the afternoon, begin your adventure as you travel to Bartolome Island. Famed for its striking Pinnacle Rock – an eroded volcanic cone that stands in jagged magnificence at the edge of the shore. Here, the colder waters create the perfect conditions for bountiful marine life to thrive. Across its two jaw-dropping beaches, watch for turtles and sea lions, then turn your attention to the base of Pinnacle Rock for a glimpse at the small colony of Galapagos penguins – the northernmost penguin species in the world.

Return to the vessel for dinner onboard with your fellow travellers.

Wake this morning for the chance to explore Mosquera Islet, situated between North Seymour and Baltra islands. One of the archipelago’s smallest islands, Mosquera is home to one of the Galapagos’ most populous sea lion colonies. With excellent snorkelling and the possibility of spotting blue-footed boobies and the stony marine iguana, this little stretch of white sand beach packs a punch with its animal-spotting offering.

Later, hop over to North Seymour to observe the archipelago’s abundant birdlife. A common nesting ground for the mesmerising frigatebird, North Seymour is the perfect spot to admire the crimson throat of this striking creature. Elsewhere, swallow-tailed gulls perch on cliffs and body-surfing sea lions can be seen riding the surf.

Today begins with a trip to El Barranco on Genovesa Island. In the southern stretch of Darwin Bay, this volcanic trail takes you past the nesting grounds of storm petrels, tucked into the holes formed by erosion in the ancient lava flows.

In the afternoon, explore farther across Darwin Bay and watch for lava herons, whimbrels, curious masked boobies, the endemic lava gull – the rarest in the world – and countless others. As you follow the scenic trails to the cliff’s edge, you’ll find the mangrove nesting grounds of red-footed boobies below.

This morning, step ashore on South Plaza Island. This crescent-shaped island is home to a sizeable colony of the Galapagos’ famous land iguanas, smaller in size than their relatives on nearby islands. Most curiously, a number of hybrid land and marine iguanas can be seen along the island’s trail, recognisable by their black-and-grey colouring and land iguana crest.

Depending on the season, sesuvium – the island’s abundant succulent – will carpet the landscape in bright green or burning red, dotted with prickly pear cacti throughout. Some 1,000 sea lions reside here, and many of the archipelago’s beloved birds choose to stop in for a spell.

Further south, the volcanic rock formations of Santa Fe Island date back almost four million years. Densely covered in cacti and saltbush, and surrounded by crystalline waters, Santa Fe Island is one of the archipelago’s most spectacular spots for wildlife. Endemic Galapagos hawks circle overhead, racer snakes dart between boulders, rice rats scurry into crevices and the Santa Fe land iguana suns itself on the rocks.

Take the opportunity to snorkel with dancing sea lions and plentiful tropical fish, then take to the trail in search of the Galapagos mockingbird.
