The Scenery – Breathtaking natural parks, red ochre cliffs and quintessential Australian outback experiences

Breathtaking sights greet you at every turn of this tour, from rock formations over two billion years old to luxury outback retreats.

At the tip of the Dampier Peninsula is Cape Leveque, famed for its ochre cliffs, white beaches and stunning blue ocean. This rugged and pristine slice of the Kimberley hosts a number of sacred Aboriginal sites, including sand dunes and ancient middens.

There are few sights more jaw-dropping than the Buccaneer Archipelago’s puzzle of around 1,000 rocky islands emerging from the deep blue ocean. Truly fall in love with the region as you board a scenic sunset cruise to reach these otherwise inaccessible areas.

Take in the quintessential Australian baked red earth and boab-studded plains along seemingly endless stretches of ancient land on the Gibb River Road. Learn Dreamtime tales and, if given the chance, tuck into the sweet and crunchy nutritious boab tuber.

Explore the breathtakingly beautiful Bungle Bungle Range in the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park — where towering, tiger-striped 360-million-year-old rock formations have eroded into beehive-like domes emerging from an otherwise flat landscape.

Inside Purnululu National Park, follow the echo of an ancient gorge to discover an astonishing geological formation. A massive amphitheatre of red rock with a pool of water in the middle, the acoustics of Cathedral Gorge are so fantastic, music has been played and recorded here.

From above, Purnululu National Park is an imposing sight. Take to the skies with an unforgettable helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range. Be wowed by dramatically sculpted natural formations, spectacular chasms and gorges and view Western Australia’s majestic baked-red earth landscape from above.

The Accommodation – Unrivalled sophistication in the outback

Soak up the beauty of the Kimberley Coast at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm — a small, family-owned pearl farm turned unique accommodation — staying in an ensuite safari-style tent nestled in a remnant rainforest with views across the mangroves to the bay.

An iconic hotel in the Kimberley Region, the Spinifex Hotel is a jewel in the crown of Derby. Recently rejuvenated, this piece of luxury tucked away in the outback has set the benchmark for regional accommodation and a new standard of sublime hospitality.

On the banks of the Fitzroy River lies the Fitzroy River Lodge, a beautiful oasis set on 50 acres of natural bushland with shady trees and landscaped gardens. A welcome sight for all travellers, the lodge offers a wide range of onsite facilities including a refreshing outdoor pool, fully licensed bar and restaurant and tennis court.

When it comes to accommodation in Purnululu National Park, your Bungle Bungle lodge sets a standard of its own, giving you the best access to the towering beehive domes, Piccaninny Creek, Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm.

Itinerary

Day 1: Broome — Cape Leveque — Dampier Peninsula

Your tour begins in Broome early this morning (7.15 am start) with a journey up the spectacular Dampier Peninsula. Largely Aboriginal-owned land, the Dampier Peninsula is a delight for all travellers. Here, a striking contrast of stunning red pindan cliffs, white-sand beaches and clear turquoise waters creates the perfect backdrop to a unique cultural and coastal adventure. Along the way, hear of the local Bardi and Nyul Nyul who inhabit this land and discover their ancient traditions. Upon arrival at Kooljaman at Cape Leveque, take a quick dip or beach-comb the pristine sand. After lunch, immerse yourself in Broome’s working pearl farm — recently described as ‘one of the most unique destinations in Australia’. On a fascinating Pearl Farm Tour, learn about the world’s largest and most beautiful pearls, which have been farmed in these waters for generations. This afternoon, take to the water on a sunset cruise along the Buccaneer Archipelago.

Accommodation: Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Dampier Peninsula — Ardyaloon — Beagle Bay — Derby

After breakfast, travel to the remote Aboriginal community of Ardyaloon (One Arm Point) to view the working Ardyaloon Trochus Hatchery & Aquaculture Centre and learn about Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, hunting, gathering, history and culture (subject to access and seasonal). Savour a picnic lunch overlooking the beaches, Trochus shell hatchery, and tidal movements of the King Sound prior to departing. En route, stop at Beagle Bay, an Aboriginal community developed and established by Trappist monks around the 1890s. Here, be sure to see the Sacred Heart Church, built entirely by hand by local Indigenous people and Pallottine monks, with its stunning inlaid mother of pearl shell altar. Leaving the Cape Leveque Road, head north on Highway One, arriving in the small outback town of Derby in the afternoon.

Accommodation: Spinifex Hotel, Derby

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3: Derby — Fitzroy River

Leave Derby this morning and head to the Boab Prison Tree, believed to be 1,500 years old. Here, learn of the harsh treatment the local Aboriginal people endured during the early colonisation and reflect in the shade. Afterwards, begin your journey on the iconic cattle track, the Gibb River Road, travelling through a series of remote and beautiful landscapes while hearing stories of early settlement. Soon arriving at the Napier Range, an exhumed Devonian reef over 350 million years old, set out on an easy walk to the geological wonder of Windjana Gorge. After a bite to eat, walk through the 750-metre Tunnel Creek, a cave system carved through the Range, which takes you from one side to the other. Be sure to keep an eye out for the bats and freshwater crocodiles that live here, as well as stalactites, secret caves and magical views. It is here we also learn the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hideout in the late 1800s. As the sun sets, continue through the Oscar Range, past the groves of majestic boab trees, before arriving at your accommodation on the banks of the Fitzroy River.

Accommodation: Fitzroy River Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4: Danggu Geikie Gorge Cruise — Halls Creek — Purnululu National Park

Rise and shine for breakfast at 6.45am today. An early departure takes you to Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park, where you’ll explore the magnificent gorge and river system by boat. Nature carved this spectacular 30 metre-deep gorge between the ranges during the Devonian geological period. A cruise is the best way to experience the scenery and abundant wildlife of this natural wonder. The gorge floods during the wet season, with the swirling water leaving its bleached mark on the colourful gorge walls. Though the water retreats during the dry season, permanent water remains to sustain the wide variety of Kimberley wildlife. Depart Fitzroy Crossing, breaking the journey to the Bungle Bungles with a visit to the gold rush town of Halls Creek. Leave the main highway to venture into Purnululu National Park by way of the 4WD Spring Creek Track. Late afternoon, arrive at the comfortable Bungle Bungles Lodge, your home for the next two nights.

Accommodation: Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge/Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5: Purnululu National Park

Today, you’ll have ample time to explore the extraordinary World Heritage-protected Purnululu National Park, home to the famous Bungle Bungle domes. Rivers created this landscape of unique orange and black-striped ‘beehive’ geological formations over a period of 20 million years. Unbelievably, only the locals knew it existed until the early 1980s; once discovered by others, the area was made a National Park in 1987. Take a guided walk (2-3km) along Picanniny Creek to the lookout and then into stunning Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks create a natural amphitheatre. This afternoon, take an inspiring 18-minute helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles, sure to be a highlight of your trip. You will have the option to upgrade to a longer flight, should you wish to do so (charges apply). This evening, view a sensational sunset with drinks and nibbles before settling down for dinner.

Accommodation: Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge/Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6: Purnululu National Park — Kununurra

This morning, set out on a hike to Echidna Chasm, a natural cleft in the rock that reaches a staggering 200 metres in height while only being one metre wide at certain points. A walk up the creek bed is rewarded with bird’s eye views of the shaded escarpment, which you can admire as you learn how the chasm received its name from an Aboriginal Dreamtime story. Drive out of the Bungles, enjoying lunch en route, finally arriving at the vibrant East Kimberley town of Kununurra, where your tour comes to an end.

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
