Step into a centuries-old story of myth, devotion and transformation at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This exhibition gathers art from across South and Southeast Asia to celebrate Vishnu, the Hindu deity who descends to Earth in countless forms to restore balance. Sculpture, painting, textile, photograph and film weave together to trace Vishnu’s avatars: Matsya the fish, Kurma the tortoise, the beloved Krishna, Rāma, the noble prince, and Kalki, the future avatar of renewal. Pieces drawn from collections in Australia, India, Cambodia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom sit alongside new works commissioned just for the show, including original pieces by acclaimed contemporary artists.
