The Best Time to Go — There’s no right or wrong time to visit

As the Maasai Mara and Serengeti are home to high densities of wildlife all year round – and the unique Kichakani Camp moves with the animals – you will always be at the centre of the action. Here’s a guide to help you decide when to go.

June to October – Dry Season

This is the most popular time to visit. Animals congregate near water sources, placing predators and prey in close proximity and making for exciting game viewing. Vegetation is less dense, so it’s easier to spot the wildlife. This is when the Great Wildebeest Migration passes through, crossing the Grumeti River. The area can get crowded during this popular period, so staying at smaller camps and lodges is a definite plus.

November to May – Wet Season

The wet season offers a more intimate wildlife experience without the crowds and with the added bonus of lush, green scenery. Migratory bird species return, creating a kaleidoscope of colours. Late January to February is also wildebeest calving season, which provides high excitement as lions and cheetahs descend on the fragile young, providing action-packed game drives. Due to the abundance of water and vegetation, game can be more spread out, but don’t let that be a deterrent – there are still few places on earth that can compete with the wildlife you’ll encounter. The rain usually comes in the afternoons, so it’s unlikely to affect your safaris.

What We Love...

With itineraries personally designed, tried and tested by our in-house travel experts, you can expect the very best from every Tour Created by Luxury Escapes.

Luxury Escapes’ Head of Tours, Sonia Pilovska, promises that this incredible safari experience will immerse you in Africa’s stunning surrounds like no other: “Arriving at Sanctuary's Olonana Camp was like stepping into a Condé Nast photo shoot. Everything I’d read about the refurbishment was true – and then some,” she says.

“First up, the location: set on the banks of the Mara River meant that every morning I was woken by the sounds of the hippos below my deck as they noisily came up for air. The monkeys in the trees waiting in the hope that I'd accidentally leave a door open so they could steal some biscuits was another reminder of how immersed I was in the experience!

The room was next-level beautiful no matter where I looked; the artwork on the walls, the free-standing bath with incredible views, the most comfortable bed I’d ever slept in and the floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows that I’d open each afternoon so I could hear the sounds of the surrounding forest and all its inhabitants, while I enjoyed a glass of bubbles”

Sonia adds: “Lastly, I can’t go past the beautiful staff who call the camp their home. Their smiles always present, their attention to detail never failing and their eagerness to hear about your daily sightings – even if they've seen and heard it all before – made my stay here unforgettable.”

The Accommodation – Award-winning, glamorous lodges and luxury tented camps in the best sanctuaries in Africa

Nestled at the edge of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp affords unparalleled views across the breathtaking extinct-volcano landscape. Luxurious canvas tents have been designed to complement the surrounding acacia trees while providing all the creature comforts of a 5-star hotel in the beautiful wild. Completing the ultimate glamping experience each tent comes with an en-suite bathroom and indoor bucket shower, with your own personal tent attendant filling your bucket shower to the perfect temperature whenever required from the outside.

Translating from Swahili as ‘Sanctuary in the bush’, Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp truly places you in the heart of the wild, amid more than one million wildebeest and zebras who call the Serengeti home. Experience a unique moveable camp, located in two set locations based on the natural migration path in the Serengeti National Park. The ten, luxurious tents – each styled differently and boasting private wooden decks – can be packed up and moved along the way, ensuring a more intimate experience of the park. In addition to the sophisticated private tents, the camp features a grand central canopied area with lounges and dining wings, offering unparalleled views over the soul-stirring landscape.

The exceptional Sanctuary Olonana Camp invites you to enjoy a private stretch of the dramatic Mara River, bordering the epic Maasai Mara in Kenya. This breathtaking sanctuary offers an abundance of wildlife, a natural river that runs through the property and is home to a crash of resident hippos, and unbeatable luxury in the form of modern suites with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening up onto Mara River views. With sophisticated free-flowing spaces that blend in beautifully with the surrounding forest setting and a stunningly decorated main lodge, it is easy to see why it is regarded as one of the top safari properties in Africa — named the best resort in Africa in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards.

The Experiences – Venture on intimate safaris, experience gourmet bush dining and incredible Maasai culture

Head to the Manyara region to see Ngorongoro Crater: a deep, volcanic crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world, a popular location to witness the annual migration of zebra and wildebeests. Explore the crater with morning and late afternoon game drives, plus enjoy a remarkable drive to Lake Manyara, “the loveliest lake in Africa” as novelist Ernest Hemingway said. Look out for the population of resident flamingos dotted across the diverse landscape.

Spend three memorable days on game drives in the Serengeti, travelling with expert local rangers. Switching between two set locations, the camp’s unique concept means you will always be at the heart of the action, no matter the season.

Arrive in Kenya where you will stay and visit the region's most famous reserve, the Maasai Mara, the highlight of your Kenyan adventure. Imagine grassy plains and rolling hills brimming with wildlife, bejewelled with Maasai villages and specked with acacia trees, this is Maasai Mara - a magical place where nature and culture entwine. Here you will be able to see big cats, the big five, over 300 birds species, Maasai herdsmen graze their cattle side by side with predators, discuss your sightings with our naturalist who will be on hand to answer any of your questions, and witness nature’s biggest wildlife show (depending on season), the annual Great Migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra - crossing Africa’s most famous rivers.

Take the unmissable opportunity to get an insight into the vibrant and traditional life of the Maasai tribespeople. One of the most authentic ethnic tribes of Africa, Maasai people have clung to their traditional way of life in spite of modernisation, making them a symbol of enduring African culture.

Indulge in memorable dining experiences throughout the tour, including a private picnic on Ngorongoro Crater floor watching the wildlife go by, an elegant dinner in the middle of the wilderness in the Maasai Mara bush. Let the magic of bush dining engage all your senses as you enjoy nightly sundowners around the campfire with twinkling stars overhead, the spectacular views of your surrounds, tantalising African flavours and evening wildlife sightings.
