Camino da Costa — Set your own pace and discover the beauty of Portugal en route to Spain

From Porto’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed core to the ruins of Castro S. Paio along Praia de São Paio Beach and the heavenly beauty of Viana do Castelo, a town so beautiful the Romans thought they’d reached paradise — this portion of The Portuguese Coastal Way affords picture-perfect moments you’d miss on the traditional central Camino de Santiago route.

Unlike the other Camino trails, this unique walk takes you through 250km of beautiful and diverse scenery that hugs the refreshingly cool Atlantic Ocean, forests filled with hidden history and rural fishing ports and Galicia towns sheltered deep within valleys. Throughout, enjoy the unique opportunity to walk and discover at your own pace — whether that’s keeping up with your expert walking guide or taking a long lunch in one of the many charming Galicia towns en route — never forgetting to get your pilgrim’s passport stamped in each new destination. At the conclusion of your tour in Santiago de Compostela, you’ll receive a certificate to signify you’ve completed this iconic pilgrimage — an incredible memento.

Along the way, be sure to rest your feet in the soothing hot springs of Caldas de Reis, stand before the unique beauty of Oia’s 12th-century Royal Monastery of Santa María de Oia and explore Baiona’s epic tangle of cobbled laneways.

The Pensiones — Local authentic guesthouse stays with homecooked dinners and local wine

A distinguishing feature of this incredible pilgrimage through Portugal and Spain is that it allows you to see a unique side of the country tourists would often miss. Staying in local pensiones enhances your Camino da Costa experience by allowing you to interact with locals and get up close and personal with the many sides of the local culture.

Within these often family-run guesthouses, you will enjoy a private room with ensuite facilities and get a taste of authentic life with 10 three-course dining experiences, usually prepared by your local guesthouse host and served with local wine. Felicidades (‘cheers’ in Portuguese)!

Day 1: Arrive in Porto, Portugal

Welcome to Porto (OPO), your starting point to the centuries-old Camino da Costa pilgrimage and a UNESCO World Heritage-listed coastal city on the banks of the impressive Douro River. Nestled into the hillside, this ancient metropolis opens before you like a pop-up book, revealing narrow cobbled streets that wind past merchants’ houses, rooftop terrace bars pouring glasses of eponymous port wine, and extravagant baroque churches with ornate gilded interiors — the Church of São Francisco is not to be missed.

On arrival, make your own way to your hotel to drop off your luggage, before meeting your experienced walking guide and tour group at approximately 6pm for an orientation briefing prior to beginning your once-in-a-lifetime Portugal Coastal Way walk tomorrow.

Please Note: arrival transfers and pre-tour accommodation can be arranged for a surcharge. Please contact Luxury Escapes Customer Service at the time of booking to organise.

Accommodation: Ribeira do Porto Hotel or similar

Day 2: Porto – Póvoa de Varzim | 14km, approx. 3–4 hours walking

Today, leave Porto behind and begin one of the world’s most famous and impressive walks along the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Camino da Costa, a centuries-old trail also known as St. James Way or the pilgrimage of St. James, across northwestern Spain from Portugal.

Begin your trek from Labruge to Póvoa de Varzim along the salt-licked Atlantic Ocean coastline, passing quaint fishing villages and stumbling upon ancient history. Along this sliver of coast, enjoy fascinating glimpses into Iron Age life on Praia de São Paio Beach, home to the ruins of Castro S. Paio hiding within the whetstones.

Upon arrival in Póvoa de Varzim, why not take advantage of the nearby beaches for a barefoot walk in the soothing salt waters? Then, return to your pensione, where you will be treated to a delicious three-course dinner with local wine. Felicidades (‘cheers’ in Portuguese)!

If time permits, be sure to haul yourself up to Torre dos Clérigos and enjoy a glass or two of authentic port wine at the Ode Porto Wine House.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 3: Póvoa de Varzim — Esposende | 20km, approx. 5–6 hours walking

Known for its exquisite medieval architecture, Póvoa de Varzim is blessed with an abundance of historic sites and attractions that will enliven your experience. Spend the morning discovering the Monastery of Rates, a Romanesque church built between the 12th and 13th century, admiring the china-blue Muro de Azulejos, a mural wall depicting the history, tradition and spirit of Portugal, and visiting the Castelo da Póvoa, a fortress built between 1701 and 1740.

Following this, continue your Camino journey through the verdant Coastal Natural Park and Parque Natural do Litoral Norte on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Tread quietly on the riverbanks through lush oak woodland and soaring maritime pine forest, past sandy dunes, en route to Esposende, a hidden gem firmly off the international tourist trail.

One of the most charming and quaint places you’ll encounter in Portugal, this village retains all of its historic and medieval atmosphere with the likes of Castro de São Lourenço, an Iron Age village, the Baroque Igreja da Misericórdia de Esposende church and cobbled streets that lead to Praia de Ofir beach.

On arrival, give your feet a rest and sip a glass of local Portuguese wine before your decadent three-course dining experience.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 4: Esposende — Viana do Castelo | 23km, approx. 5–6 hours walking

Another day, another walking adventure! Today, continue north along the Costa Verde, admiring the serene coastal vistas of the Coastal Natural Park en route to Viana do Castelo. Cross the 19th-century Ponte Eiffel bridge across the glistening waters of the Lima River into this jewel of the Costa Verde, a town so breathtaking, it’s said the Romans believed they had found paradise when they reached Viana in the first century BC.

The ideal setting for exploring the low Lima Valley, this town is also blessed with exquisite medieval architecture, a 19th-century old quarter brimming with breathtaking boulevards, and a lovely riverfront. Enjoy a rest at your local pensione before perhaps enjoying a quiet stroll through the town’s alley-woven core to enjoy an authentic bite to eat (additional cost).

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast

Day 5: Viana do Castelo — Âncora | 18km, approx. 4–5 hours walking

Continue to unearth the splendours of Portugal today as you meander along the serene Atlantic Ocean coastline. You will feel a distinct connection to history as you tread the same path as countless pilgrims over the past 1,000 years.

After arriving in Âncora, enjoy time to unwind and relax before discovering this ancient fishing village at your leisure. Nestled in the valley and protected by the winds of Serra d’Arga hills in the north, and Monte de Santa Luzia in the south, this tranquil fishing village is brimming with wonders just waiting to be discovered.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 6: Âncora, Portugal — A Guarda, Spain | 15km, approx. 5 hours walking

Your Portuguese chapter comes to a close today as you continue towards Caminha and ferry across the spectacular 19th-century International Bridge over the River Minho to Galicia, Spain. The natural border between Portugal and Spain, this bridge marks the beginning of the last stretch of the Camino da Costa.

Trek to A Guarda and the summit of the famed Monte de Santa Trega. On the way, explore the partly restored Iron Age Castro de Santa Trega village ruins and, at the top, discover a 16th-century chapel and truly awe-inspiring panoramas across the River Minho, across to Portugal and over the Atlantic.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 7: A Guarda — Oia | 15km, approx. 4 hours walking

Today marks a mammoth achievement of an incredible 105 kilometres walked along this centuries-old trail. Visit the famed city of Oia, a magical town perched above the crashing swells of the Atlantic Ocean, with the magnificent Royal Monastery of Santa María de Oia overlooking it all.

Although this 12th-century masterpiece is not open to the public, you can still admire its architecture from the outside before retiring to your charming pensione for the evening.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 8: Oia — Baiona | 15km, approx. 4 hours walking

Become attuned to the serene crush of the Atlantic soundtrack along your coastal walk from Oia to Baiona today, passing clifftop towns sewn into the hills and enjoying panoramic vistas over the ocean.

What awaits you in Baiona is an epic tangle of inviting lanes, with a handful of 16th-century and 17th-century houses, spiralling ancient guard garrisons that resemble sandstone, the 1337 fortress-turned-Parador Hotel and a replica of the La Pinta ship, which arrived in the Port of Baiona in March 1493 with news of America’s discovery.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 9: Baiona — Vigo | 23km, approx. 5 hours walking

After today, less than 100km stands between you and the grandeur of the Santiago de Compostela. Time permitting, be sure to visit Castelo de Monte Real, stroll along the waterfront and enjoy a dip in the Atlantic before beginning your morning trek.

From Baiona, drink in views over the magnificent Cíes Islands, the Bay of Vigo and the Natural Park on the horizon en route to Vigo, a fishing city tucked away in the south-west of Galicia. On arrival, ascend upwards through the Casco Vello (Vigo’s Old Town) through an intriguing jumble of laneways into the heart of the city and towards Praza da Constitución, the perfect place for a pre-dinner drink.

Afterwards, retire to your local pensione for a well-deserved three-course dinner prepared by your guesthouse hosts.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 10: Vigo — Arcade | 22km, approx. 5 hours walking

There’s next to no need for a map along this incredible journey now that yellow arrows and scallop plaques (the symbol of Santiago de Compostela) abound everywhere you look in Vigo, leading you to the elusive Santiago de Compostela like the yellow brick road.

Leave this breathtaking coastal city via the Ruta da Auga (water route), inviting you to wander along the serene Ría de Pontevedra and enchanting forest surrounding the Alto de la Lomba. Afterwards, return to the sea to arrive at Arcade, an iconic stop on the Portugal Coastal Way renowned for its fresh seafood, the Church of Santiago de Arcade and the Castle of Soutomaior.

After checking into your local pensione, be sure to venture out to try Arcade’s oysters, the gastronomic pearl of this little-known fishing village.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 11: Arcade — Pontevedra | 13km, approx. 4 hours walking

Today, soak in the coastal beauty that lies before you as you leave the Atlantic Ocean behind and delve in-land into the pristine beauty of Spain, following ancient stone paths to arrive at the provincial capital of Pontevedra.

Effortlessly combining history, culture and style, Pontevedra’s interlocking lanes and plazas provide the ultimate base for pilgrims to discover quaint shops, buzzing marketplaces, aromatic cafes and tapas bars.

On arrival, enjoy ample time to discover the city’s Romanesque churches and granite squares — the Praza da Leña is particularly worth a visit — before returning to your pensione for the evening.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast

Day 12: Pontevedra — Caldas de Reis | 21km, approx. 5 hours walking

After breakfast, return to the trail once more to continue your journey to Caldas de Reis. Pass chestnut groves and eucalyptus woods as you continue to the hamlet of Ponte Cabras, where you will encounter the rectory of Santa Maria de Alba hidden among the trees.

Emerging from the dense woods of Lombo de Maceira, discover a statue of the iconic Saint James the pilgrim and his cane, illuminating the way to proceed. As you arrive at the village of Tibo, with its picturesque fountain and stone cross, you’ll know you’re only a short while from Caldas de Reis.

One of the most unique cities you’ll encounter along this epic walking track, Caldas de Reis is the quintessential destination for relaxation after completing just shy of 200km. Venture to the iconic Fuente Termal and put your feet in the steamy waters as brass lion heads spout therapeutic mineral water.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 13: Caldas de Reis — Padrón | 18km, approx. 4–5 hours walking

Bright yellow arrows and scallop plaques continue to direct you closer to Santiago de Compostela today as you bid farewell to Caldas de Reis and cross Umia River. Continuing to Padrón, watch as the landscape transforms dramatically from dense woodlands into lush grass plains as you ascend towards the hamlet of Santa Maria to arrive at the cobbled entrance of Padrón.

A charming city of stone houses and stone-paved streets, it’s reputed that Padrón is where St James’ (Santiago’s) body landed on arrival from Palestine in its stone boat.

On arrival, enjoy a moment to refresh at your pensione before venturing into the city to try Pimientos de Padrón at a local tapas bar (own expense). A specialty of the city, there’s an expression in Spanish, ‘Los pimientos de Padrón, unos pican y otros no’, which translates to ‘peppers from Padrón, some are hot and some are not.’ So, if you’re feeling lucky, don’t miss the opportunity to play roulette with these green-skinned chillies.

Accommodation: Pensione with private ensuite facilities

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner with local wine

Day 14: Padrón — Santiago de Compostela | 22km, approx. 5 hours walking

Congratulations, this is it: this is the final day of your epic, once-in-a-lifetime Camino da Costa pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Departing Padrón, pass through many small villages and hamlets to arrive at Agro dos Monteiros, where you will be able to spy the soaring spires of the ornate Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

En route, pass the rocky ruins of the Castelo da Rocha Forte to arrive at the unique Portuguese Coastal Way entrance to Santiago de Compostela. Unlike the other Camino routes, this entrance leads you into the Praza da Prateria and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral through the oldest doorway, dating back to 1078.

On arrival, the picturesque Praza do Obradoiro, also known as ‘The Golden Square’, is the ideal place to enjoy a celebratory drink overlooking the west-facing side of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, before checking into your hotel.

Accommodation: Costa Vella Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 15: Santiago de Compostela, Spain

The last pit-stop on an epic pilgrimage, Santiago de Compostela’s magnificent architecture, world-famous cathedral, handsome plazas and Compostela completion certificate are the reward of an incredible 250km walk from Portugal to Spain.

Though the tour concludes this morning after breakfast, the city is yours to discover at leisure. Step into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed core and be transported back in time by the ornate Baroque architecture of the cathedral and the stone-paved streets, which invite you into handsome plazas, such as Obradoiro, Azabacheria, de la Quintana and de las Platerias.

Follow the cobbled streets to Rúa da Raiña and Rúa Franco, where you can enjoy all the specialties of Galicia, and stroll to the beautiful Paseo de Ferradura, affording panoramic vistas of the city’s grandeur.

If you wish to extend your stay in Santiago de Compostela, please contact the Luxury Escapes Customer Service Team, otherwise, make your own way to the airport for your onward journey.
