From the lodge, it’s just a five-minute drive to Bushy Beach Scenic Reserve, home to the rare yellow-eyed penguin colony. Visit in the late afternoon to observe them return from a day out fishing to feed their young. A tip: bring binoculars (or the lodge has some to borrow, subject to availability). The beach is closed from 3pm every day to protect the penguins, meaning all viewing hides are located at a distance on the cliffs. It’s also just a five-minute drive to the Oamaru blue penguin colony viewing spot, with informative tours available. Pen-y-bryn Lodge is located around a two-hour drive from Dunedin Airport (DUD) Transfers are not included, please plan accordingly.
