Itinerary

Day 1: Tokyo (Yokohama), Japan

Your journey begins as you depart Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane on your included flights to Japan. Touchdown at Tokyo-Haneda International Airport (HND), pass through customs and immigration and make your way to your pre-cruise stay at Hyatt Regency Yokohama.

With a long history as one of Japan’s most prominent – and, at times, only – foreign ports, Yokohoma offers plenty of interesting sights, including the country’s largest Chinatown. It’s also less than an hour away from Tokyo by train: if time permits, drop your bags and find serenity in the heart of the big city at Meiji Jingu and Yoyogi Park, scramble through Shibuya Crossing or savour a drink in Shinjuku.

Accommodation: Hyatt Regency Yokohama (Standard Room, King Bed, Corner) or similar

Day 2: Tokyo (Yokohama)

Holland America Line’s Noordam departs Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal at 5pm, giving you the perfect half-day to continue exploring the city. Stick closer to Yokohama today: explore the quirky Cup Noodles Museum or the Yokohama Museum of Art, explore the city’s historic Red Brick Warehouse – now a thriving arts hub – or slow things down with a stroll through Sankei-en’s perfectly landscaped gardens.

Please arrive at the cruise terminal well in advance of your departure time. Check-in closes an hour prior to embarkation.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3: At Sea

With your first full day spent at sea, take the time to better acquaint yourself with Noordam’s offerings. Perhaps treat yourself to a massage at the Greenhouse Spa & Salon (surcharges apply), try your luck at the casino or enjoy a workout at the fitness centre.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Aburatsu

Nestled in the southern corner of Kyushu Island, Aburatsu offers miles of sandy beaches and lesser-known gems, including the spectacular, clifftop Udo Shrine, whose red-lacquered overlooks the shimmering Pacific.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Amami Oshima

The largest of the islands between Kyushu and Okinawa, Amami Oshima is home to countless spectacular beaches and one of the largest mangrove forests in Japan. Take the chance to try the island’s signature dish, keihan, or chicken rice, a delicious combination of omelette, ginger, green onion and seaweed on a bed of rice, covered in steaming chicken broth.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Naha

The Ryukyu Islands – officially known as Okinawa Prefecture – offer the perfect point of contrast for ‘mainland’ Japan: relaxed, tropical and steeped in little-known cultural heritage, it’s a brilliant place to stop a while and take it easy.

Okinawa’s wonderful prefectural capital once served as the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom before its official annexation by Japan in 1872. Few relics of the city’s past remain, but Shiru Castle – including the royal residence and gardens – endures, offering visitors a glimpse of Ryukyuan history. The ceremonial gate to the Shuri district, Shureimon, is so magnificent it appears on some versions of the 2000 yen note.

Alternatively, spend the day grazing through the Makishi Public Market, one of the finest places to sample tempura, tropical fruits and, if you dare, smoked irabu sea snake, highly poisonous and considered an exceptional delicacy on the island.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Ishigaki Island

Ishigaki is the most populated of the southern Yaeyama Islands – themselves closer to Taiwan than Tokyo – and most of the island is covered in lush rainforest and unbelievably fine beaches. You’ll find hints of Ryukyu culture in the most unexpected places: whole-wheat soba dishes thrive here (versus Japan’s preferred buckwheat noodle) and traditional houses can still be found at places such as the Ishigaki Yaima Village.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8: Hualien, Taiwan

Taiwan’s east coast is famous for its magnificent lakes, sun-soaked beaches and the tremendous beauty of Toroko Gorge, one of the country’s most spectacular natural wonders. Arrive in Hualien in the early morning and enjoy the day at leisure – visit Toroko National Park or spend the day exploring the many Taoist and Buddhist temples scattered across the city.

If you’re sticking to the city, be sure to try Hualien’s bubble tea – Taiwan invented the now world-famous drink in the 1980s, and it’s still considered the best in the world.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9: Keelung

Taiwan’s northern port of Keelung stands just 20 minutes by metro train from Taipei, the country’s electrifying capital. Arriving at approximately 8am, enjoy a full day to explore the city. A visit to the city’s highest skyscraper, the pagoda-inspired Taipei 101, is a must – the views don’t get much better than from the building’s 89th-floor observatory. Alternatively, spend the day appreciating the city’s incredible temples, including the incense-infused Bao-An Temple and storied Longshan Temple.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10: At Sea

Take another day to enjoy the incredible offerings onboard Noordam, whether you choose to sample the gourmet dining options (charges apply at select restaurants) or hit the blackjack tables at Casino Action. The day is yours to spend as you wish, relaxing and rejuvenating with the many options at your feet.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11: Nagasaki, Japan

Return to Japan and welcome to Nagasaki. With a history that stretches back to the 7th century and a laidback vibe, Nagasaki’s hospitality is legendary. Hunt for street food in Chinatown and Shianbashi Gourmet Street, or visit the Nagasaki Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum, a moving testament to the horrors of war.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 12: Kagoshima

Today you’ll arrive in Kyushu Island’s southernmost city, Kagoshima. There’s a lot to explore here – the city is famous for its palm-lined streets and its proximity to Mount Sakurajima, an enduring symbol of the city.

One of Japan’s grumpiest active volcanos, Sakurajima, often erupts several times a day. For a closer glimpse, cross the bay via ferry and walk the Nagisa Lava Trail.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 13: Kōchi

Welcome to Kochi, a city renowned for its friendliness and hospitality to visitors. Visit the Kōchi Castle for a look at one of the country’s best-preserved historic castles. For lunch, be sure to try the city’s most famous dish: katsuo no tataki, or lightly grilled and sliced bonito tuna, served with spring onions, ginger, garlic and soy sauce.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 14: Kobe

Famous for its exceptional beef, Kobe is also home to a fascinating historic port, excellent mountain gardens and charming hot springs. Kobe offers the perfect base to explore everything the region of Kansai has to offer, including Osaka’s neon-drenched streets and mouth-watering street eats, Nara’s deer-filled wilderness and Kyoto’s ancient temples and teahouses, all less than an hour away by bullet train.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 15: At Sea

With another full day at sea, this is your final chance to enjoy the incredible facilities onboard Noordam, and immerse yourself in the plethora of exciting entertainment from the Rolling Stone Lounge to the World Stage theatre showcasing dance troupes, theatre productions and lecture series led by local cruise and travel experts. Enjoy an afternoon of shopping or, then perhaps take a dip in the sparkling pool on the top deck, or try your hand at a game of pickleball with newfound friends or family.

Accommodation: Noordam

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 16: Tokyo (Yokohama)

Today, your odyssey comes to an end as you dock at Tokyo. Disembark at approximately 8am and return to the Hyatt Regency Yokohama to drop your bags and explore the city.

While you can let the day take you where it will, you might wish to rise early and visit Tsukiji Outer Market, a bustling hub selling fresh seafood and other local delicacies, for the freshest sushi in the world, or head to Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree for unforgettable views of the sprawling city. Scramble among the crowds through Shibuya Crossing, shop your way through Akihabara or Harajuku or spend the day wandering through Yoyogi Park, home to the magnificent Meiji Jingū shrine.

Accommodation: Hyatt Regency Yokohama (Standard Room, King Bed, Corner) or similar

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 17: Tokyo (Yokohama)

After one final breakfast, it’s time to say sayonara to Tokyo. Make your own way to Tokyo-Haneda International Airport (HND) to catch your included international flight to Australia, returning home with lifelong memories.
