DAY 3: CHRISTCHURCH - MT. COOK

Depart Christchurch and travel southwards across the Canterbury Plains to picturesque Mt Cook. Enjoy a scenic drive as we cross the longest bridge in New Zealand across the Rakaia River which originates in the Southern Alps and pass through farmlands and sheep pastures.

At approximately 3,754 metres high, Aoraki Mount Cook is both the highest and most famous mountain in New Zealand. Rightly it gives its name to the National Park that surrounds it, which is brimming with 70,013 hectares of ice, snow, rock, subalpine scrub, tussock and riverbed. Within the park – or closely surrounding it – are the majority of New Zealand's great mountains. The park also contains five of New Zealand's largest glaciers and more than 140 peaks over 2,134 metres high.

This afternoon, enjoy a two and a half hour Tasman Valley 4WD adventure as we take the road less travelled to access awe inspiring views over the Tasman Glacier and its gigantic moraine wall*. Your fully trained guides will show you the beautiful southern night sky with state-of-the-art astronomy telescopes and binoculars. If the weather is not favourable, we tour the galaxy under a high definition digital dome planetarium. DAY 4: MT. COOK – LAKE WANAKA

After a leisurely breakfast we depart Mount Cook, following the Tasman River and the shores of Lake Pukaki into the Mackenzie Country. Travel through Twizel, which came into existence for the construction of the Waitaki Power Scheme. After many miles of rolling tussock country, you will travel through Lindis Pass and follow the Lindis River onto Lake Wanaka.

Wanaka is a popular tourist resort on the southern shores of Lake Wanaka. The Cardrona Valley near Wanaka was the scene of a small goldrush in 1862. Prior to 1940 the settlement of Wanaka, the town was known as Pembroke and it has retained the flavour of a typical New Zealand holiday town, in comparison to Queenstown which has become an international resort. Wanaka is now mainly a tourist resort surrounded by mountain scenery and a ski resort in winter.

This afternoon is at your leisure to discover the beautiful town of Wanaka at your own pace. Spend the afternoon wandering the streets in search of fresh local produce or simply relax at your hotel located on the lake’s shores.

Kinross exclusively represents five local, world renowned and internationally awarded Central Otago wineries in the heart of Gibbston. Here you will be welcomed to the official Cellar Door for Coal Pit, Domaine Thomson, Hawkshead, Valli & Wild Irishman. Leave Queenstown area and skirt Lake Wakatipu in the shadow of the rugged Remarkable Ranges until you arrive at the township of Five Rivers. Enjoy magnificent views of the mountains of Fiordland until the wide panorama of Lake Te Anau comes into view.

The name Te Anau is probably more correctly rendered in its original Maori form ‘Te Ana-au’, which means 'Cave of the Swirling Water'. Te Anau is now a major resort area in the Fiordland/Southern Lakes district and is situated on the shore of the South lsland's largest lake of the same name.

The town is compact enough to travel around on foot and features a great range of restaurants, bars and boutique stores. The lake was created by glacial action thousands of years ago and a mysterious phenomenon causes the lake to vary several inches in depth every few minutes, giving credence to a Maori legend of an ancient Taniwha (demon) still breathing beneath the surface.
