A rugged coastline, vivid rock formations, abundant wildlife and the mystic humpback whale are hallmarks on this magnificent trek. Set off from Merimbula along the gentle path of this 31-kilometre route from Merrica River all the way to Barmouth Beach, near Eden. This iconic walk is regarded as one of the best walks on the far south coast of New South Wales, where you will be able to explore rocky capes, banksia woodlands, tea tree groves and sheltered coves along the way.

What You’ll Love...

The Walk – Lighthouse views, whale watching, unparalleled natural scenery and more await

The Merrica River rises on the northern slopes of Mount Nadgee, running deep and still northeast before emptying into beautiful Disaster Bay. This is wilderness at its most remote. Explore the pristine area around the river mouth and be rewarded by an ever-changing landscape of waterfalls, rockpools, eucalypt forest and vast expansive views of the bay. Eastern water dragons and hermit crabs command the beach at low tide, while in the air a pair of resident sea eagles can often be spotted patrolling for food.

Scottish-born Australian pioneer Ben Boyd harboured dreams of building an entrepreneurial empire along these shores before he met an untimely, murderous death in the Solomon Islands. He never lived to see his historic 23-metre Boyd's Tower, built in 1847, in Ben Boyd National Park commissioned as a lighthouse. Gaze upon the spectacular migration of humpback whales from this lookout point – whales frequent the area from late May to early December.

The spectacular Haycock Bay to Barmouth Beach walk follows the headland on the southern shore of the Pambula River estuary. Rich in Aboriginal history and sites, the walk captures the remote beauty of Ben Boyd National Park, from windswept heath to woodlands to rugged rock formations and dramatic cliffs.

Unique accommodation – Experience living history in style and comfort in three heritage cottages on the site of the Green Cape Lightstation

Perched on the edge of a peninsula, within Ben Boyd National Park lies the historic accommodation at the Green Cape Lightstation.

Enjoy a guided tour of the elegant Lightstation, built in 1880, and watch the whales in season. More whale watching can be enjoyed from the comfortable verandahs of three beautifully restored cottages, originally the lighthouse keepers’ dwellings.

Wake up to misty mornings and the sound of ocean waves in comfort. Each cottage boasts a fully equipped kitchen, dining and lounge areas, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and warm open fireplaces perfect for winter evenings after our walks. The rooms are tastefully furnished with TV, DVD, dishwasher, washing machine, outdoor deck and barbecue.

The Food – Your walking tour includes three breakfasts, four lunches and three dinners prepared by your guides

Enjoy hearty, healthy food freshly prepared by your Park Trek guides throughout your stay and trek. There’s plenty to go around and each authentic, tasty meal can be tailored to your specific dietary requirement.

A continental breakfast spread of cereals, stewed fruit, toast, spreads and yoghurt sets you up for the walk.

At midday look forward to lunch choices, which vary from day to day. Tuck into meat, salad, bread and wraps – and enjoy roasted chicken and salad or quiche and frittata on different days.

Each evening your guides present flavourful two-course dinners that they have prepared. The ever-changing menu may feature roast lamb, chicken breast or salmon fillet.

Keep up your energy with a self-serve trail mix selection at the beginning of each day; and enjoy snacks and nibbles during the trips, including fresh fruit for the trail and biscuits and/or fruit cake for tea breaks. Back at the Lighthouse, nibble on dips, cheese, antipasto and crackers pre-dinner every evening.

Stay well hydrated on tour with non-alcoholic beverages provided by Park Trek.
