What You’ll Love...

The Experiences – From UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites to charismatic cities and incredible scenery

Considered the Riviera of Ethiopia and the prettiest city in the country, Bahir Dar will be your launch pad for exploring the largest lake in the country, the birthplace of the Blue Nile: the eternally shimmering Lake Tana. Cruise the waters of the lake on a private boat to reach the world-famous Zege Peninsula, steeped in mystery and home to 20 secluded monasteries. A short walk amid the lush forest will see you stopping by the most beautiful monastery in the region: Ura Kidane Miret, dating back to the 14th century and boasting restored paintings depicting the Ethiopian ecclesiastical life, from saints in torment to battle scenes.

Follow the ancient steps of kings and emperors as you walk along the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site of the Royal Enclosure, in Gondar – the so called Camelot of Africa for its stone-walled, royal compound of fairytale castles. The entire compound measures a spectacular 70,000sqm, and contains numerous castles and palaces – but the highlight is the Fasilads’ Palace, standing tall at 32m and built with solid basalt stones.

Take in the wild beauty of one of Africa’s most beautiful ranges, surrounded by precipitous cliffs and verdant terraces: the UNESCO World Heritage Site Simien Mountains National Park. Be impressed by its terraces covered in lush greenery and dotted with trees, majestic peaks reaching altitudes of 4000 meters brimming with incredible wildlife – which includes birds, ibex, Gelada baboons, bush buck and the rare Simien Fox.

Travel to another UNESCO World Heritage site, the city of Axum. Steeped in history, Axum is home to some fascinating churches, striking monolithic stelaes reminiscent of Egyptian obelisks, relics of the ancient Kingdom of Aksum - and to the oldest church on the African continent, St Mary of Zion - believed to be the current resting place of the Ark of The Convenant.

Named a UNESCO World Heritage site and ‘eighth wonder of the world’ Lalibela is up next. The famous 11 interconnecting rock-cut churches, dug into the ground by hand in the 12th and 13th centuries to represent the 'New Jerusalem', make this a spiritual place of pilgrimage and devotion. Divided into two groups, one representing the Earthly Jerusalem and the other one the Heavenly Jerusalem, each of the 11 churches represent a unique artistic achievement for both structure and artworks.

Get to know all the secrets behind Ethiopia's traditional cuisine with an interactive cooking class: experience the flavours and products of the country and learn the secret recipies that have been passed on for generations in the local villages.

A sprawling metropolis sitting at 2355 meters above the sea-level, Addis Ababa will be the last stop on this discovery tour of Ethiopia. Visit all the major sights of this vibrant city, including the enthralling Ethnological Museum, one of the finest museums in Africa, showcasing Ethiopia’s cultural and social history.
